Thoothukudi is the most Industrialised District of the State's Southern Districts. They were historically known as the 'Pearl City' due to their pearl fishing activity. It has been a major port, maritime, and fisheries center. It is bounded to the north by Virudhunagar District, to the south and west by Tirunelveli District on to the east by the Bay of Bengal. V.O. Chidambaranar Port Trust is a major port. It was the home port of the Swadeshi Steam Navigation Company.
